Teaching kids financial confidence

Most of us were never taught how money works. We think the next generation deserves better — and that learning it should be genuinely enjoyable.

Why we exist

Children form their attitudes to money between the ages of three and seven — long before anyone thinks to teach them. Yet financial literacy isn’t on the curriculum in any meaningful way, so whether a child learns to budget, save or spot a scam comes down to whether someone at home happens to teach them.

That follows people into adulthood: into overdrafts, credit cards, and decisions made without the vocabulary to understand them. We didn’t want to write another worksheet. Children switch off when money is taught as arithmetic, because to them it isn’t a maths problem — it’s about fairness, wanting things, and understanding why they can’t have everything at once.

Just 47% of UK children receive a meaningful financial education. Only a third recall a money lesson at school they found useful. Money and Pensions Service, Children and Young People’s Financial Wellbeing Survey

What we built

Working alongside qualified teachers and specialists in child development, we built a ten-lesson programme that starts with what money actually is and ends with what it costs to run a life. Along the way it covers needs and wants, earning, saving and interest, borrowing, tax, and keeping track of what you spend.

Our live classes are taught one-to-one by a qualified teacher — not recorded, and not to a class of thirty. A nine-year-old asking a question gets an answer pitched at them, and a teacher who notices when something hasn’t landed. The same ten lessons are also available as a self-paced digital course, for families whose week won’t take a fixed slot.

We believe every child deserves a financial education — accredited, properly taught, and genuinely fun.

Where we are now

Smartmonies teaches families across the UK, works with schools and education centres, and licenses its digital course to organisations who want to offer it to their staff’s families or members. We also work with charities to fund places for children whose families couldn’t otherwise afford them.

We’re a small team, deliberately. It means every teacher is someone we have chosen, checked and know.

What we believe

Four things we hold to

💪

Confidence over content

Knowing the words for things matters less than feeling able to make a decision. We teach for confidence first.

🎲

Fun is not a bonus

A bored child learns nothing. Games, stories and challenges aren’t decoration — they’re how the ideas stick.

🧩

Every child learns differently

One-to-one teaching lets us adapt pace, format and approach to the child in front of us, not an average.

🌍

Money is a life skill

Budgeting, saving and understanding cost of living are things everyone needs. We teach them as such.
