Frequently asked questions
If your question isn’t here, ask us through the contact page and we’ll answer it — and probably add it to this page.
For ages 7–11 · Years 3 to 6 · Key Stage 2
Getting started
What age is Smartmonies for?
Ages 7 to 11 — Years 3 to 6, or Key Stage 2. The programme was written for that age group, and the language, pacing and examples are pitched accordingly.
Children just either side of that range are considered case by case. Tell us your child’s age and school year and we’ll be honest about whether it’s the right fit.
Do you teach older children?
Not yet. A Key Stage 3 programme for ages 11 to 14 is on the way — if you’d like to hear when it opens, email us and we’ll add you to the list.
In the meantime, an 11-year-old still in Year 6 is squarely within the current programme.
Can we try anything before paying?
Yes — two things, and they’re different. Create a free parent account and you get both:
- Lesson one of the digital course — What is Money? Unlocked in your dashboard straight away, for your child to work through on their own.
- A 20-minute taster class — live and one-to-one with a qualified teacher, booked from your dashboard when it suits you.
No payment and no card details for either. The taster is the one to book if what you really want to know is how your child gets on with a teacher.
How do we start?
The cheapest way in is to create a free account, book the free taster class and try the free digital lesson. Neither costs anything and there’s nothing to cancel.
When you’re ready to go further, book a single class for £50, or commit to the full ten-class course for £450. There’s no obligation to continue after a single class.
My child needs something a bit different — can you adapt?
Often, yes. If your child needs a slower pace, is already well ahead of where the programme starts, wants to learn alongside a sibling, or is trying to work out something specific, we can shape the lessons around them rather than run the standard ten.
Tell us what you’re after on our bespoke lessons page and we’ll say honestly whether we can help — including if we think the standard course would serve them just as well for less.
Do I need to create an account?
Yes — a parent account gives you your dashboard, where you’ll find your classes, materials and receipts. It’s also where both free things live: your first digital lesson, and the booking for your free 20-minute taster class. It takes a minute at sign up.
Does my child need their own login?
No. Children never create accounts and never log in. Everything runs through your parent account, which is deliberate — no child credentials means nothing for a child to lose or share.
What do we need at home?
A device with a camera and microphone — laptop, tablet or desktop — a reasonable internet connection, and somewhere quiet to sit. A shared room works better than a bedroom.
Classes & booking
What is the free taster class?
Twenty minutes, live and one-to-one with a qualified Smartmonies teacher, at no cost. It comes with your free parent account and you book it from your dashboard.
It’s a shorter version of a real class rather than a sales call. Your child meets their teacher, does some actual money work, and you get to watch how the two get on before spending anything.
Everything else is the same as a paid class: the same secure video platform with a waiting room, the same DBS-checked teachers, and we ask that a parent is at home.
How long is a class?
A paid class is a 40-minute slot, live online and one-to-one with a qualified teacher. Within it, teaching runs 30 to 40 minutes depending on the child. The free taster class is shorter — 20 minutes.
A Year 6 pupil will usually want the full time. A Year 3 pupil often does their best work in half an hour, and we’d rather finish while a child is still enjoying it than push on to fill the slot. The slot stays yours for the full forty either way, so a class that’s going well has room to keep going.
Is it really one-to-one?
Yes. Just your child and their teacher — not a class of thirty and not a recording. It means questions get answered as they come up, and the pace adapts to your child rather than an average. That goes for the free taster too.
Will my child have the same teacher each week?
Wherever possible, yes. Familiarity matters with children, so we keep the pairing consistent unless illness or scheduling makes that impossible — in which case we’ll tell you in advance.
How does booking work?
Single classes are booked one at a time, whenever suits you. The full course runs as a weekly slot at the same time each week, held for you across the ten lessons. The free taster is booked the same way, from your dashboard.
What if we need to rearrange?
Tell us more than 24 hours before and we’ll move it at no cost, as often as you need. Inside 24 hours, or if your child doesn’t attend, the class counts as taken.
We apply that sensibly — if your child is unwell on the morning of a class, tell us and we’ll move it. The rule exists to prevent repeated last-minute changes, not to catch out families with a stomach bug.
How long do classes stay valid?
Six months from the day they’re bought (or earned through a referral). That’s plenty for a term-time rhythm, and if life gets in the way, tell us what’s going on — we’d rather move things around than see a class you paid for quietly lapse. If school holidays or illness have made six months unachievable, ask us and we’ll extend it.
What happens during school holidays?
We don’t run classes through the main school holidays. Your weekly slot pauses and resumes afterwards, so the course simply runs longer and nothing is lost. We’ll confirm the dates when you book.
The digital course
What is the digital course?
The same ten lessons as interactive activities your child works through at their own pace — sorting tasks, budgeting challenges, decision-making scenarios and a quiz at the end of each lesson. No teacher, no timetable.
Can we try it before paying?
Yes. Create a free parent account and lesson 1, What is Money?, is waiting in your dashboard — no payment and no card details. If your child enjoys it, the full ten-lesson course is £45, and lesson one you already have.
Your account also includes a free 20-minute taster class with a teacher. That’s a separate thing from this lesson — live rather than self-paced — and you can use both.
Is it included with the full course?
Yes. All ten digital lessons come with the £450 full course at no extra cost, and they stay yours whether or not you finish the live classes.
Can lessons be replayed?
As often as you like. Children often return to the activities long after finishing a lesson, which is rather the point.
What device does it need?
Any modern web browser on a laptop, tablet or desktop. Some activities involve dragging, which is easier with a mouse or touchscreen — see our accessibility statement if that’s a concern.
Payment & refunds
What does it cost?
- Free with an account — the first digital lesson, and a 20-minute taster class with a teacher
- Single class — £50
- Full course — £450 for ten classes, plus all ten digital lessons
- Digital course — £45 one-off, with lesson 1 free when you create an account
The full course works out at £45 a class rather than £50 — a 10% saving for committing to all ten. Bespoke arrangements are quoted case by case; see bespoke lessons.
When do I pay?
In full, before classes begin. We use a third-party payment provider and never see or store your card details.
Can I change my mind?
You have 14 days from purchase to cancel, as the law requires for anything bought online. If classes have already started, we refund minus the value of those delivered.
The digital course is different: once you open a paid lesson, that 14-day right ends — which is why lesson 1 is free with your account, so you can try it first.
What if we stop partway through the course?
Email us and we’ll refund the classes you haven’t taken, charged at the £50 single-class rate rather than the discounted £45 — the discount was for committing to all ten. Your digital lessons stay yours.
Full detail is in our Refund & Cancellation Policy.
What if a class is cancelled by you?
You choose: a replacement class at no cost, or a full refund for that class. If we can’t offer a suitable replacement time, we refund automatically.
Do you offer help with cost?
We’re committed to making this accessible, and we’d rather have a conversation than have a child miss out. Get in touch and we’ll be straight with you about what’s possible.
Do you have a referral scheme?
Yes. Every parent account has its own referral code. If a friend books the full course using it, they get 10% off and a free class is added to your account automatically — up to ten in total. Your code and the full detail are on the Referrals page, which shows your personal code when you’re signed in.
Where do I enter a referral code?
In the basket — look for ‘Add coupons’ just before you pay. A referral code gives 10% off the full course (£405 instead of £450) for families new to Smartmonies. The parent who referred you gets a free class as a thank-you. Codes live on the Referrals page of every parent account.
Safety & privacy
Are your teachers checked?
Every teacher holds an Enhanced DBS certificate before teaching a single class. We verify teaching qualifications and references, and all teachers complete safeguarding training. Meet them here.
How are classes kept safe?
Classes run on an encrypted video platform with a waiting room — the teacher admits your child, and nobody can join uninvited. Teachers never contact a child privately, never arrange to meet outside a scheduled class, and never ask a child to keep anything secret from a parent.
Our full safeguarding policy sets out how we handle concerns.
Do I need to be there during the class?
You don’t need to sit in, but we ask that a parent or guardian is at home and contactable throughout. That applies to the free taster class as well.
What information do you hold about my child?
Their first name, their age or school year, and anything you choose to tell the teacher. That’s it — no surname, no date of birth, no school, no address, no photograph.
We’ve written a short version for children explaining this in their own terms.
What if I have a concern?
Email info@smartmonies.co.uk straight away. Concerns about a child’s safety are acted on the same day, not put through a complaints queue. For anything else, our complaints procedure sets out what happens.
Schools & organisations
Can you work with our school?
Yes — and with education centres, tutoring providers, after-school clubs and home-education groups. There are three options: we teach your pupils, you license the materials and teach it yourselves, or pupils work through the digital course. See the detail.
The programme currently covers Key Stage 2, Years 3 to 6. A Key Stage 3 programme for ages 11 to 14 is on the way.
Do you invoice schools directly?
Yes. No online checkout needed — we quote and invoice your school or organisation directly.
Is the programme accredited?
It holds the Financial Education Quality Mark from Young Enterprise, meaning it has been independently assessed against national standards. You can verify our listing on their website — details here.
Can an employer or charity fund places?
Yes. Employers and membership organisations can license the programme for their people’s children, and we work with charities and trusts to fund places for families who couldn’t otherwise take part.
