Financial literacy for children on RTS

Smartmonies appeared on RTS, Serbia's national broadcaster, to discuss why children need to understand money - and why waiting until adulthood is too late.

📅 May 2026

Reaching a national television audience is a different proposition from talking to an industry room. Most viewers aren’t in finance or education. They are parents, wondering whether their child understands what a contactless card actually does.

What we talked about

The same things we tell parents every week: that money habits form far earlier than people expect, that children learn far more from making small decisions than from being told what to do with money, and that spending has become invisible in a way that makes all of this harder than it was a generation ago.

And the practical point that surprises people most — you don’t need to be good with money yourself to teach a child well. You need to talk about it out loud, and let them make a few small mistakes while the stakes are still low.

Our thanks to RTS for giving the subject proper airtime. Financial education tends to be treated as a niche interest until someone points out it’s the one topic that touches every household, every month, for life.

Beyond the UK

Smartmonies teaches families across the UK, but the problem it addresses isn’t a British one. Children everywhere are growing up with money they can’t see, in a system nobody has explained to them. The conversation is worth having wherever it can be had.
